Adverse Effects in Collaboration with Julynn Wilderson, 2014
"Adverse Effects" is a two channel video installation in collaboration with performer artist Julynn Wilderson.
The work was developed in the winter of 2014 after Penelope and Julynn spoke of various controversial new stories surrounding the HPV vaccine Gardisil. One particular story focused on an increase of serious illness after young women were injected with the state enforced vaccine.
Penelope and Julynn discussed how Gardisil utilized fear based sensationalized marketing to imply that HPV caused death and Gardisil stopped cancer, while some studies explained these claims as inaccurate, absurd and extremely exaggerated.
The conversations that informed this video project explored how pharmaceutical companies exploit social fears, while partnering with state government to demonstrate control over female populations for the purpose of capital gain.
The movement that was generated from these topics focused on a duet where the two female performers co-existed in the same space but did not acknowledge each other while performing synchronized circulatory choreography around a free standing wall. The choreography involved pushing, leaning and falling from the wall to the ground in repeated quick motions, while the whole piece circled the wall a dozen times before the duet matched up and ended with finally making eye contact.
To further explore ideas of the female form within public authoritative space, Penelope and Julynn performed the movement in a closed public pool at different times of the year. The footage gathered from these gorilla filming studies was then projected and incorporated within a live performance with audio by Artist Alex Borgan at The C33 Gallery in Chicago in April 2014.
